The mission of the West Jefferson Hills Historical Society (WJHHS) is to locate, document, chronicle, and preserve the history and heritage of Pleasant Hills, Jefferson Hills, and West Elizabeth. For more than 25 years, our dedicated volunteers and members have carried out this mission through countless hours of research, archiving, educational programs, community events, and publications.
In recent years, one project has generated particular excitement within our organization: researching and preserving the history of Lobb’s Cemetery and the nearby Yohogania County Courthouse. Located in Calamity Hollow, near the communities of Floreffe, West Elizabeth, and Elrama, Lobb’s Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 because it is the only known burial ground in the country where federal troops who died in service during the Whiskey Rebellion are interred.
WJHHS now has an exciting opportunity to take the next step in this important project. Using advanced technology including ground penetrating radar and LiDAR, we hope to locate and document more of the 900 plus graves known to be within Lobb’s Cemetery. Many are the final resting places of individuals who served during the Whiskey Rebellion, American Revolution, Civil War, and Spanish-American War. Currently, fewer than 15% of the cemetery’s graves have been located and documented.
This will be the largest project WJHHS has undertaken to date, and we need your support to make it possible. We hope you will consider making a tax-deductible contribution to the Lobb’s Cemetery Project. Your support will help uncover, document, and preserve an important piece of our community’s history—and our nation’s history—for generations to come.
